Movie Trailers

The qualities that made the student trailer of “The Giver” good was the tone and volume of the voice overs, the seriousness of the filming, the angles the students used and the types of shots they used in their filming. Things that would’ve made it better was to check for typos, other then that the trailer they made was very good.

Rules

A couple rules that is very key in Jonas’ community is getting an assignment, getting a family and following the rules perfectly, their society is very ordered and without the rules nobody would know what to do. Another very important rule is to not leave the community, because if somebody did leave then they would find out about a whole other world. Teenager or kids that are entering puberty are required to take pills every morning to control the wanting otherwise there wouldn’t be a need for birthmothers and the elders couldn’t control how many o each gender every family has. Some of the rules in Jonas’ community are just pointless because they aren’t taken seriously. Rules like no riding a bicycle before they’re a 9, or the girls keeping their ribbons tidy.

Rules are mostly a good thing although some of them are pointless, some rules make my life better in quality because everybody has to follow them but some can be very annoying. Pointless rules in the school would be no smoking, no fighting, no going to the energy center, no skipping class and no swearing because nobody follows them anyways. If people really cared about these they would just not do them in the first place. Life could be better if all the rules were actually enforced but it doesn’t really effect me so much that people smoke because it’s their choice to die earlier.

Controversial in the Giver

I think the most important thing that happens in the community would be getting your assignment, this is basically telling you what you’ll be doing for the rest of your adult life. No career changes can be made so if you don’t like your job you don’t have a choice but to do it. After you turn 12 there are no other ceremonies besides being released, getting a spouse and receiving children, so your assignment is your life until those other ceremonies take place.

Lois Lowry

Lois Lowry was born March 20, 1937 in Oahu Hawaii to her parents Robert and Katherine Hammersbur. Originally her parents named her Sena, after her grandmother but later changed her name. Born the middle child with her older sister of 3 years Helena who died at the age of 28 and her younger brother of 6 years Jon who she still has a close relationship with. Due to her fathers work Lois moved several times, from Hawaii to Brooklyn in 1939 at the age of two. They later relocated to Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1942. Following World War II Lois and her family moved to Tokyo, Japan where her father was stationed from 1948-1950. Lived in Carlisle again briefly in 1950 before moving to Fort Jay at Governors Island, New York.Went through junior high at the Tokyo American School at Meguro and returned to the United States for high school. Lois attended Curtis High School at Staten Island. 1952 she entered Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights, New York to successfully finish high school. She entered Brown University in 1954 which she attended until her marriage in 1956 at the age of 19 to Donald Lowry, a U.S navy officer. Later in their lives together they had 4 children, daughters Alix and Kristen and sons Grey and Benjamin. Because of Donalds military career they moved to Connecticut, California where Alix was born, Florida where Grey was born, South Carolina and finally Cambridge Massachusetts where Kristen and Benjamin were born. Her and her family settled in Cambridge after Donald left the military to attend Harvard Law School, after that they moved to Portland, Maine. As time pressed on Lois found time to complete her degree in English literature at the University of Southern Maine in 1972. Afterwards she pursued graduate studies at her alma mater, during that time she took up photography. While working as a freelance journalist she got the opportunity for her first book “A Summer to Die”, published in 1977. The same year her and Donald divorced, Lois was 40 year old. She wrote about serious and funny issues, she also wrote about her own life like the day her son Grey died in 1995.

Summer Holiday

During the summer we have 2 months off school, some people argue we should have a shorter vacation time and others argue we should leave the time off as it is. Each side of the argument has its reasons to believe what it does. Which side do you argue?

Personally I think we should cut off the two extra weeks because usually we don’t do anything in the last months of summer vacation. Another person who thinks this is a teacher who blogged about this issue Teacher Blog. The extra two weeks at the end of summer can be moved to other times in the year, maybe just to increase the amount of time in our other vacations or to make other vacations. Our school district should make new shorter vacations instead of having one very long one. To move vacation time should be agreed upon by the school district, parents, students and the school board. During the summer a lot of what we learn in school is lost with time Learning Loss. Other countries have different vacation schedules for their students, some have summer vacations in between terms instead of having it at the end of the school year Vacation times.

Summer vacation is also a time to relax and travel to different places. It’s also a time to have fun at beaches and be warmed by the sun, in a way I think the summer holiday should stay the length that it is because it’s a good time to relax after the school year Upside for Summer. Students also use the summer to look for jobs they need to get for money. Time in the summer is also used for teachers to broaden their knowledge Teachers Learning. Some parents wouldn’t agree on changing the summer vacation time because they like to take the time to get away from their jobs too, they are entitled to take vacation time and they usually take that time off with their kids in the summer Time Off.

I learned being a poet is mostly a way to write down what you think. It wouldn’t make a very god job or career because it wouldn’t pay very well and it’s really more of a hobby or a passion.

Writing poetry isn’t about reaching a deadline or doing it because you have to, it’s because you want to or feel inspired by something. You don’t have to have a typical way of writing poetry, you can make your own but it’s good to have a basic writing idea for your own poetry or it will be kind of odd.

The thing about the video conference that stood out to me was when he read his poem to us and the quality of answers to the questions we asked him. He took our questions into consideration and answered them honestly and took the time to do this conference with us instead of doing whatever else he had to do.

The information I got from my classmates was to slow down the pictures and text, to do a voice over, and to turn down the volume of the music. I did all those things to improve my movie except the voice over. I think it turned out pretty well.

What do the Olympics mean to me?

I was always proud to be Canadian but this is just another reason to be, winning the Olympics in our home country.

I didn’t really watch the Olympics so I don’t have a favorite part. If I had to choose some favorites I heard about it would be Crosby’s winning goal, even though I really don’t care about hockey. The women’s gold medal in hockey and all the people supporting our athletes.
